I’ve been a fan of Roger Clyne for many years as he fronted a band started in Arizona, The Refreshments. Their most popular song was Banditos, though there is another song that more of you have likely heard without knowing the artist behind it. It’s called Yahoos and Triangles. Again, a name that likely doesn’t ring a bell for you. Why is it so well known? It was the theme song for the TV show King of the Hill.
After two albums, The Refreshments ended and Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers was born. Once again, it is possible the band isn’t well known to you as they chose to self-produce and promote their music. Most of their concerts are in smaller venues throughout the US and Mexico. Twenty-five years ago they started doing a weekend in Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco), Mexico at the Northeast corner of the Sea of Cortez. That tradition has grown over the years and they will soon celebrate it’s anniversary. I don’t know the exact number, but I think I’ve been to at least five of them.
Many of his songs include a Mexican theme and he even wrote Mexican Moonshine as a dedication to tequila. So it isn’t surprising that Roger Clyne launched his own brand of tequila. It was originally named Mexican Moonshine after the song and there was even a promotion that included a CD of some of his tunes taped to the bottom of bottles. A few years ago the name was changed to Cancion Tequila and it is certainly worth a taste.
Now, let’s talk a little bit about the recent concert Roger had off the Loreto shore. He was on a recent sailing of the Gato Loco catamaran that sailed from Loreto around several of the islands. His sailing was even written about as the Los Locos Loiterers Cruise. While Roger was onboard, he recorded a number of videos performing some of his songs. I’ve linked and embedded each of the YouTube videos at the end of this post so you can enjoy them. While watching, you’ll likely recognize various spots in the background.
Maybe someday in the future we can get Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers to do a Circus Mexicus Sur. A perfect spot would be the beach in front of the Oasis Hotel. Roger, what do you think?
