My first trip to Loreto was in 2005 so anything before that is something I can only read about. Recently a post entitled Flying Sportsmen Lodge — Tribute To Tenacity was written with a fairly detailed history of a lodge long gone. You’ll definitely want to give it a read for the full history.
Within the main story, there were some other tidbits about local history. For example, I only knew John Steinbeck as the author of The Grapes of Wrath. Soon after it was published, he ventured with marine biologist Ed Rickets to the Sea of Cortez and wrote The Log from the Sea of Cortez.
After reading about the Flying Sportsmen Lodge, I was also curious what is there today as I knew nothing of that name was still around. After asking around a bit, I was able to find the original location. Part of the original property is now the Loreto Shores RV Park. There are also some custom homes just North of the RV park on part of the original property. I may just have to drive by there to see how it looks now.
